Björkliden

The small mountain village of Björkliden is both a charming ski resort with a slightly slower pace and a starting point for adventures to take place.

James Cripps

In the late 1890s when Malmbanan was built, the engineers needed housing to be built after the railway. The chosen location ended up being Björkliden as it was located between Kiruna and Narvik. It was a relatively protected area with a fantastic view of Torneträsk and Cuanjávággi, or Lapporten. Björkliden’s oldest building is Gammelgården, which today functions as a ski lodge.

In 1939, Hotell Fjället was completed and the construction of Låktatjåkka Mountain Station began. When Narvik was invaded in the early 1940s, the tourism decreased up to Björkliden. But as soon as the war was over, it picked up again. Almost 30 years later Hotell Fjället burned down and after the fire a reconstruction and renovation of the hotel began. In 1974, the new Hotell Fjället opened in almost the same premises as today. Over the years, more lifts have been built, cabins have been added and the golf course has been developed.

Björkliden ski resort Kiruna

Björkliden has Sweden’s third highest drop, lots of natural snow and the most beautiful view in Scandinavia. So it’s no wonder Björkliden has become such a popular ski resort. There are several different lifts and slopes to choose from that suit everyone, from beginners to professional skiers. If you instead want to get away from the hustle and bustle of lifts, slopes and après ski, there are several off-piste trails to choose from.

If you are completely new to downhill skiing or want to learn more about where to find the best skiing places in the area, one option is to book private skiing lessons. There is also a ski school for children and guided summit tours and off-piste tours.

If you can show a valid lift card, there is a free shuttle bus between Riksgränsen and Björkliden so you can take the opportunity to experience both ski resorts during your stay.

There are also several possibilities for cross-country and touring skiing along the various cross-country trails. If you want to go on a longer trip, you can go to Låktatjåkko Fjällstation and have a Låkktawaffle or make a trip to Kratersjön. A trip to Trollsjön or Kärkevagge is also to recommend.

Ski equipment and snowboards are available for rental in Sportshopen. During the summer it is possible to rent mountain bikes, fishing equipment and golf sets.
