Caves evoke feelings of mystery and excitement in exploring things that are secret and long forgotten. Down in the underworld you become overwhelmed by large caverns, narrow passageways and ancient formations created by the forces of nature.
One of Sweden’s longest cave systems is “hidden” near Abisko. After packing our car with caving equipment and driving westwards for a few kilometers we hike up the mountainside to the entrance of a cave called “Kåppashåla”. Before our descent underground we put on overalls, helmets and headlamps and then the guide leads you down through a labyrinth of narrow passageways and fabulous formations created by water flowing for thousands of years.
Above ground again, we walk along Kåppasjåkka River where we can also pause to see waterfalls and giants’ kettles.
