Luossavaarabacken

Kiruna's central slope for skiing and snowboarding. Best viewpoint in the city!

In northern Sámi the mountain is called Luossavarrí, which translates to salmon mountain. It is an old mine mountain they opened as an open pit mine in 1919 and started to extract ore in 1921. The mining continued until 1967 when it was closed because they wanted to concentrate the work underground in Kiirunavaara. At the most it was around 350 persons working in the Luossavaara mine.

In the year 1981 Luossavaara got a second chance at life but as a research mine which continued until the mid 80’s. It was in the research mine they tested a new large-scaled sublevel caving technic which was more effective than earlier and is used today in Kiirunavaara. In 2011 they cast the walls and the entry to the old mine and the old industrial buildings from the mining days were demolished.

The ski slope in the city

Today, Luossavaara is used as a recreation area and it is the city’s very own ski slope. The slope offers incredibly nice runs with city views and mine, beautiful views of Kebnekaise mountains, and sometimes you also see the northern lights dancing in the sky while you’re whizzing down the slopes. Or why not take a trip with cross country skis on the lit track?

Luossabacken has three lifts, four slopes and a park with jumps and rails. Total piste length is 2500 meters and a vertical drop of 156 meters. Luossabacken usually opens for the winter season in November and stays open as long as there is snow!

At Café Sport, at the foot of the hill, you can rest up between runs with good food and beverages. Do not miss the fantastic waffle buffet! In the ski rental you will find alpine skis, snowboards and cross-country skis.
