Driving in Kiruna

Getting around

Kiruna is Sweden’s largest municipality, bordering both Norway and Finland. With the car comes the freedom to explore our Arctic destination on your own terms from the mountains to the forest and all the little villages in between. Driving around Kiruna is usually a peaceful and relaxing experience, with roads winding through magnificent landscapes. But beware – the weather can change quickly, especially in winter, and you could be joined at any time by reindeer, moose or a curious fox on the road. Here’s some information for those travelling by car.

Rental cars

If you want to make the most efficient use of your time, it can be a good idea to rent a car. For the summer, you should book your car rental well in advance, preferably in the spring. There are several car rental companies in Kiruna, both in the city centre and at the airport. Whether you need a 4×4 for winter roads, a minibus for larger groups or a smaller car for shorter excursions, there are several options to choose from. You can also add optional extras such as winter equipment, GPS or an additional driver.

Do you have the right tyres?

Due to the Arctic climate, it is important to keep up to date with weather forecasts and road conditions before travelling. We have experienced snowy weather even at midsummer. In Kiruna, we normally change to summer tyres around mid-May and to winter studded tyres in mid-October. But snow is unpredictable and sometimes comes as early as September. If you rent a car, it is always equipped with the right tyres for the season.

Charging stations and petrol stations

You will find charging stations for electric cars in most places in Kiruna municipality, making it easy to explore our Arctic destination even with an electric car. Petrol stations are located in the following places: Kiruna, Vittangi, Jukkasjärvi, Abisko, Övre Soppero, Karesuando and Svappavaara.
