Getting around Kiruna

Walking in Kiruna

Walking in Kiruna is an experience. The wind blows from all directions at once and you are always walking into the wind. In the bell tower outside the town hall, the sculptor Bror Marklund has created a figure of a man walking in the wind, because he thought the wind was so terrible in Kiruna. Go and look at it when you are out walking. During the colder parts of the year, spikes on the shoes can also be a good idea. The ice can be hidden under fresh snow, and a fall can quickly put an end to your Arctic vacation.

But, with the right clothes and a positive attitude, Kiruna is a pleasant city to discover on foot. You’ll have time to appreciate the details of our historic and new buildings, you can easily pop into the shops or just sit on a park bench and enjoy the peace and quiet when your feet feel a little sore. The city center is compact and distances are short. If you want to walk a little further, it is possible to walk between the new and old city centers. The distance is about 3-5 kilometers, depending on the route, and takes about 30-60 minutes.

For those who want to stretch their legs a little more, there’s the Midnight Sun Trail – a nature-oriented and easily accessible path up the city mountain Luossavaara. If you live near the old town center, you can easily reach the start on foot. Do you live further away? Then we recommend taking a Hopp-electric scooter or bus to the starting point at Camp Ripan.

So sure – walking in Kiruna is not always comfortable. But it breathes freshness into both cheeks and mood.

Electric scooter

When the snow melts from the streets and Kiruna starts to thaw – it’s not just the birch trees that bud, but also the electric scooters from Hopp that pop up all over town. Since Hopp was introduced in Kiruna in the summer of 2022, it has quickly become a popular means of transportation during Kiruna’s relatively short bare ground period. Aside from being convenient, it’s also a pretty fun way to get between hotels, restaurants, attractions and grocery stores. You can easily find your nearest electric scooter via the Hopp app. It also shows you battery levels, zones and where you can drive and park. The ride is environmentally friendly. Note that electric scooters are not allowed on pedestrian walkways, that you must be over 18 years old and that you should park with some manners. And a helmet is always a good idea!

Bicycle

During the summer, cycling is a nice way to discover Kiruna city. You can borrow a bike for free from Fritidsbanken for up to 14 days. However, please note the limited opening hours. Fritidsbanken is only a 25-minute walk from the city center. If you prefer to cycle on nature trails or downhill, you can rent a bike from the sports shop in Björkliden, Höjdmeter in Kiruna center or Outback Abisko in Abisko.
