The Kiruna Snow Festival will mark the opening of the European Capital of Culture year in 2029

October 28, 2026

The Kiruna Snow Festival will form part of the launch of Kiruna as European Capital of Culture 2029. Kiruna Lapland, together with Kiruna 2029, has agreed that the festival will mark the start of the Capital of Culture year.

The opening week will take place from 22 to 28 January 2029, in conjunction with the Kiruna Snow Festival. The official opening ceremony is scheduled for the latter part of the week. The exact date and time will be announced at a later date.

The Snow Festival is organised annually by Kiruna Lappland and features snow sculptures, activities and cultural experiences in the heart of winter. The festival brings together the people of Kiruna and visitors, creating a hub for creativity and community.

“The fact that the Snow Festival will mark the start of Kiruna’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2029 is a fantastic opportunity to put Kiruna on the European map. The Snow Festival is a celebration of winter and of those of us who live here. We adorn the town with magnificent snow sculptures, culture in all its forms, winter experiences and a strong local drive.  This is an opportunity to strengthen the tourism industry, forge new partnerships and build confidence in the future far beyond the European Capital of Culture year itself,” says Peter Salomonsson, CEO of Kiruna Lappland.
