SAS invests in Kiruna with overnight stops and more departures

March 12, 2026

SAS is introducing overnight stops in Kiruna from the start of its winter programme on 25 October. With an early morning departure from Kiruna to Stockholm and a late evening departure back, it will be possible to travel between the cities during the day. At the same time, SAS is increasing the number of departures from Copenhagen, Scandinavia’s global hub, to Kiruna to meet the growing international interest in Scandinavian winter destinations.

With the new overnight stop, Kiruna residents can fly to Stockholm in the morning, spend a whole day in the city and travel home the same evening. The initiative is part of SAS’s ongoing efforts to strengthen accessibility in Sweden through a stronger domestic network and better connections between the regions of Scandinavia and the rest of the world.

“The overnight stop makes it possible for Kiruna residents to travel to Stockholm for the day, which strengthens accessibility in the region. At the same time, we are seeing growing international interest in Swedish Lapland, and with more departures from Copenhagen, we are making it easier for travellers from all over the world to reach Kiruna. As we develop the network, we are doing so with the same focus on stable operations and high punctuality that our customers expect from SAS”, says Henrik Winell, Vice President Network at SAS.

During the high season, 17 December–7 March, SAS will increase the number of departures between Copenhagen and Kiruna from two to three per week. The timetable is designed to provide international travellers with smooth connections via Copenhagen – Scandinavia’s global hub with direct connections to destinations in Europe, North America and Asia.

The initiative also means that residents of northern Sweden will have smoother connections to Europe and further afield via Copenhagen and SAS’s global network. The improved connections to Kiruna will also contribute to increased tourism and greater accessibility to northern Scandinavia.

“Kiruna Lappland and the entire tourism industry in Kiruna warmly welcome SAS’s announcement that it will be expanding its traffic to Kiruna. This will take the form of five to six new overnight stops and increased traffic from Copenhagen. This is very positive news for the entire destination and something that we at Kiruna Lappland see as an important step forward. The increased accessibility makes it easier for both international and domestic travellers to get to Kiruna, and strengthens our opportunities to continue developing the destination together with SAS.

SAS’s decision to invest further shows that there is strong confidence in the region’s potential and in the demand that exists. Kiruna is “The Arctic Capital of Sweden” and an important hub for the entire Arctic Circle. Better flight connections not only strengthen Kiruna as a destination, but also the attractiveness of the entire region for visitors, businesses and international collaborations”, says Peter Salomonsson, CEO, Kiruna Lappland.
