Relocation of the cultural building Jerusalem

During weeks 34, 35 and 36, the cultural building Jerusalem will be relocated. Due to its size, the building has been divided into three sections. It was built in 1927 and has been a listed building since 2001; it is classified as a building of cultural and historical significance in Kiruna.

Jerusalem, which is the only building of its size and type, was built by LKAB in 1927 as a bachelor’s hostel for single miners. Constructing such a large building was a new way of addressing the workers’ housing situation and the general population growth taking place in Kiruna at that time. Its size also means that the building will need to be divided up when the move takes place.

The name ‘Jerusalem’ has its roots in the history of the house and the life that unfolded there. It is said to have stemmed from the fact that it was a lively place, where there could be both hubbub and commotion. The name alluded to the older expression ‘the destruction of Jerusalem’, which was used to describe a place characterised by disorder, turmoil and great liveliness. Over time, ‘Jerusalem’ became the established name for the house, a name that lives on to this day.
