Kiruna kommun, Riksbyggen and LKAB have jointly appointed the winning proposal for care and responsibility for Solar Egg. It will be the company Kiruna Bryggeri that is trusted to take care of the artwork and the sauna that Riksbyggen is now donating to Kiruna municipality’s art collection.
The purpose of Solar Egg is to lift social transformation and sustainability through conversation. That we now get to hand over this work of art and re-inaugurate the sauna in Kiruna feels fun and exciting, says Lars Lundgren, market area manager at Riksbyggen in Norr.
The golden work of art was produced in 2017 by the artists Bigert & Bergström on behalf of Riksbyggen in connection with the construction of new condominiums in Kiruna. After the premiere at the end of Luossavaara in Kiruna, the artwork has performed as a guest in a number of places around the world. Now Riksbyggen is once again building homes in Kiruna and therefore wants Solar Egg to return to the site.
Award-winning design icon and global tourist attraction
Solar Egg for Riksbyggen has received a number of awards, including the prestigious Red Dot Design Award, the Steel Construction Award 2017 and won the German Design Award and the Swedish Arts & Business Awards. Solar Egg has also received awards in the Swedish Design Prize and the London International Awards. In 2018, the popular culture magazine Time Out named the Solar Egg as the third most spectacular tourist destination in the world.
Kiruna Bryggeri will develop its operations on the former mining site in Tuolluvaara, TGA area, and create a social meeting place that can be reached on foot. The area, with its old mining lichens, connects the new center with Tuolluvaara and becomes an extension of the future city park. Solar Egg will be a clear eye-catcher with a view of Kiruna’s new center.
We started the brewery to do something good for Kiruna and the hospitality industry, as well as to inspire others to do fun things. Our ambition is to maintain an artistic height in what we do, and therefore it is extra fun to take care of this masterpiece, says Fredrik Kangas, CEO of Kiruna Brewery. We at LKAB are so happy that the people of Kiruna will once again be able to view and enjoy this unique work of art after it has been shown in many places around the world. It feels fantastic that Solar Egg is now back in Kiruna where it all started. The new location with its fantastic view of the center of Kiruna will be a very good addition to the city, says Therese Lindroth, head of social transformation at LKAB.
Hopefully, the Solar Egg can be installed in its new location during the fall, before the snow blankets the area in white. Maybe it can be a Christmas sauna for the people of Kiruna.
Eight interesting proposals for operating solutions – an artistic view of weight
Eight interesting proposals for operational solutions were submitted to Kiruna municipality before the application period expired in December 2023. During the selection process, criteria such as the artwork’s accessibility and visibility when placed were assessed. The operating organization itself, the artistic vision as well as long-term solutions and development have also been evaluated.
Riksbyggen will hand over the Solar Egg to the municipality of Kiruna as part of the public art collection. The Solar Egg will be accessible to both residents and visitors, and be a gilded, social meeting place in Kiruna.
