A new cold record has been measured in Sweden on January 5. The climate station in Vittangi, Kiruna municipality, came in with a minimum temperature of -44.6° according to SMHI.
Vittangi in northern Swedish Lapland has a long history as one of the coldest stations. For example, the station has the still valid Swedish cold record for November with -43.0° on November 24-26, 1890. In addition, the record for the lowest monthly average temperature in Sweden is from Vittangi with -27.2° in February 1985.
