This traveling exhibition shows a small selection of Doris Öberg’s large collection of doll-sized quilts. The exhibition includes different sewing techniques, fabrics and imagery. It is also a journey in time from older beds to newer forms and materials.
Doris Öberg (1935-2020) was born in Hortlax, Piteå. Her interest in needlework was central to her life and she always had something for her hands in the evenings on the TV couch. It could be an embroidery, a sock knitting or some sewing. For the last 30 years, however, the focus was on patchwork. Doris held countless study circles and she was one of the founders of the QuiltQuinnen association in Älvsbyn.
Doris was always curious to learn new things. She started sewing quilts in different techniques for doll’s beds and doll’s prams. At flea markets and other places, family and friends started looking for doll’s beds, doll’s cradles, toy boxes and doll’s prams, which Doris then sewed bedding for. She made the mattress, pillow, top and bottom sheets with lace and ribbon. If Doris had an idea for a special bed, her husband Folke would build it.
This exhibition shows a selection from Doris’ large collection. All quilts have been donated to Norrbottens museum.
